John Gibson took an early interest in photography after his grandmother gave him her Brownie box camera when he was eight years old.

In 1985, John enrolled in the photography program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. During those years, he was accepted as a student intern photographer at the Calgary Sun newspaper and earned a staff position there in 1988 after shooting the Calgary Winter Olympics for the Canadian Olympic Association. At that same time, John became a freelancer for the Agence France Presse (AFP) news agency.

In 1994, he travelled to Vail, Colorado, to shoot the World Mountain Bike Championships as he began to document the young sport of mountain biking. In 1998, he became the team photographer for the Kona Bike Company.

In 2001, Freeride Entertainment invited John to shoot photos during the filming of the first of what would eventually be ten of their New World Disorder movies. After the NWD series ended, he worked with Freeride Entertainment and Red Bull Media House on their movies Where the Trail Ends and Brandon Semenuk’s Rad Company.

John joined Freeride Entertainment again in May 2023 during the filming of Brage Vestavik’s Jah Drop segment for their latest movie, Nothing’s For Free: The History of Freeride Mountain Biking.

John was a senior photographer for Bike Magazine and was on their masthead as a contributing photographer starting in 1996 until they stopped publishing in 2020.

Today, John shoots photos for a collection of editorial and corporate clients in the outdoor sports and cycling industries.

When he is not taking photos of people riding their bikes, he pedals the trails that start outside his door in the Rocky Mountains of Canada.
